Volunteer experience:
When I was in 9th grade I was thinking about going to these classes that you take at church to do your first communion because I had not done mine yet. These classes were supposed to be taken for a whole year and we would just go and read the bible and learn about it. One of the projects that we were suppose to do in order to be able to do out First communion was to do community service. We had to do a certain amount of hours and we could have done anything for example cleaning the park or helping out in hospitals. We didn't just do this because we needed to do our first communion we also did this because our teacher had told us we needed to be more involved with our community and help more.
What I decided to do was go to the elementary school that is right in front of my house and I asked them if I could help them with anything. They told me I could help the teachers that have after school programs for students. This was a very fun experience because I would just go around and be with young children basically just give them things to do like color or go take them outside so they can play or do other activities. There were many programs they had after school. The one that I liked the most was when I got to help the children with their homework and I also got along with every kid that was in that after school program. It wasn't that hard because I would only do it for after school and it was only for 2 weeks because I didn't have to do that many hours.
Some challenges about doing this community service thing was that I had never done it before I was just used to coming home from school and going to sleep and when I had to do that I would have to get home and go straight to the school to help. I also was so nervous at first because I had no idea where to go and do my community service till my mom said to try asking the elementary school in front of my house. What I learned about this experience was that there are so many ways to keep kids entertained while they wait for their parents to come pick them up. I also thought about working there as a part time job because its not that hard working with kids. Recently I haven't done any community service but if I was ever given the chance to do any type of community service again I would go back to that elementary school because I really had fun helping there. I enjoyed it a lot because it made me feel like if I was a teacher and it also was something that I had fun doing after school because I had nothing else to do.
